I’m always happy to hear from prospective students, postdocs, or collaborators who see opportunities to work together. Prospective graduate students can streamline the process by first reading the information below and filling out this form, and I’ll reach out with more information. If you’ve filled out the form and I don’t respond within two weeks, please then email me to remind me!

Prospective PhD students

Applications for the NYU Environmental Studies PhD program are now closed - the next round of applications will be due in December 2025, for students to begin in the the Fall 2026 semester. Prospective applicants should carefully read our webpage to learn more about the program, and can sign up for our mailing list to receive updates. If you have further questions about the program generally, you can email phd.environmental.studies@nyu.edu.

Our PhD program is highly interdisciplinary (encompassing natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to address environmental issues) and structured somewhat differently than most ecology PhDs. Students are not admitted directly to work with one specific faculty advisor; instead, students are admitted as a cohort and are expected to work closely with multiple faculty. Thus, students do not necessarily apply to “my lab”, and hopefully will work to bridge research across multiple labs or research groups. Nevertheless, if you think you’d like to work with me for part of your doctoral research, I encourage you to get in touch any time after August 1, 2025 by filling out this form (please note: as I receive a high volume of emails, filling out the form is the quickest and most reliable way to get in touch).

Note: Our Ph.D. program guarantees 5 years of funding for admitted students, but prospective students may also consider applying for external fellowships.

Relevant doctoral fellowship opportunities include: NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (October), Soros Fellowship for New Americans (October), AAUW International Fellowship (November), Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship (November), Fulbright Foreign Student Program (for foreign students, due dates vary by country), Wildlife Conservation Network Scholarship (by nomination only)

Prospective Postdocs

I do not currently have funding to support postdocs; I’ll post funded opportunities to this page if that changes. Nevertheless, if our research interests align, I’m happy to work with prospective postdocs on fellowship or grant applications to fund their postdoctoral work with my group. If you’re interested in working with me on a postdoctoral proposal, please email me with your CV, a brief summary of your doctoral research, and a brief (1-paragraph) outline of the type of research project you’d like to pursue together.

Relevant postdoctoral fellowship opportunities:

David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship - Due in late September

  • Two-year fellowships to support conservation science research in the United States, though open to any nationality.

NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology - Due in early November

  • Three-year fellowships in biological research, open to US Citizens and Permanent Residents

  • Three competitive areas of focus; applicants to my lab are most likely to fall into Competitive Area 1: Broadening Participation of Groups Underrepresented in Biology

Black Rock Forest Postdoctoral Fellowship - Due in early November

  • Two-year fellowships in forest research at Black Rock Forest in upstate New York

  • Note: this position is employed at Black Rock Forest and under BRF staff mentorship and supervision; however, postdocs frequently collaborate with faculty at area institutions to develop research projects that align with BRF resources and priorities

NYU Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship - Due in December

  • Two-year fellowships to support early career postdoctoral fellows across all disciplines at New York University, open to any nationality

  • Note: these positions generally involve some teaching responsibilities, and are particularly well suited to scholars engaging in interdisciplinary research with the social sciences and humanities

Additional options that could be appropriate, depending on research area and nationality: Schmidt Science Fellowship (July), NIFA Postdoctoral Fellowship (September), Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Global Fellowship (September), NSF Earth Sciences Postdoctoral Fellowship (October), NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (October), Life Sciences Research Foundation Postdoc (November), AAUW International Fellowship (November), Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship (November), NOAA Climate and Global Change Postdoc (January), Fulbright Visiting Scholars Program (due dates vary by country of origin)

Undergraduate students

Opportunities for undergraduate engagement in my research group will continue to grow as we build our team and lab at NYU; in the meantime, students interested in learning more about opportunities can inquire via email. Eventually, opportunities will range from positions as lab assistants and technicians to build skills to guided independent research and thesis projects, depending on student interests and time commitments.
